Switch on and Programming

After cochlear implant surgery the next appointment is for the switch on. After the switch on there are a series of programming appointments.  Read more about these in the sections below.

Switch On

“Switch on” is when a cochlear implant is activated and the equipment is set up. It is the first time sound is heard through the implant.

Programming

Cochlear implant settings need to be checked regularly to keep you hearing well.  Programming means stimulating each electrode at different levels to measure what will sound quiet or loud. Programming is scheduled at regular intervals after ‘switch on’ (1 week, 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months and 2 years after switch on).  After that we arrange annual appointments.

Some equipment can be checked remotely using a mobile phone or tablet through a “remote check”.  A remote check allows us to find out if you are having any problems with your equipment without asking you to travel to our clinic. If you are interested in remote checks please contact the clinic.

The initial programming appointments will take place at Crosshouse Hospital. Later appointments may take place in your local area. If you are interested in this option and it has not already been discussed with you please contact us to find out more.
