Lincoln's Switch On

Lincoln's Mum tell us 

"Lincoln is one year old and was born profoundly deaf, with no access to sound from birth. He had his cochlear implant surgery the week of his first birthday. The surgery went smoothly, and his scars healed beautifully.

The one-month wait between surgery and switch-on felt like the longest month. When the day finally arrived, we were so excited. We had been told by both professionals and other families who had been through the process that his reaction might not be like the ones you often see online. We were prepared for a very mild response or even for him to be upset.

One implant was switched on first, and we could see that he was responding. He had a little cry at one particular pitch, but nothing a snack couldn’t fix. When both implants were switched on, he looked a little confused at first, and then he gave us the biggest smile.

It felt like everything had been leading up to that moment. All the doubts and worries about whether we were doing the right thing, the surgery, and the stresses of the past year were, for a moment, forgotten. Seeing him hear sound for the first time was incredibly emotional and beautiful. We feel very lucky that Lincoln is so resilient and that not much seems to faze him.

We are so excited to see how his cochlear implants will enhance and enrich the wonderful life he already has."
